Description
This is a sturdy tail feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird is a stout-bodied species with a short neck and small head. In its wild form, it is gray with two black wing bars and a white rump, though urban 'feral' populations show extreme color variation from white to reddish-brown.
Colour & Pattern
Dark charcoal gray to slaty black. There is a distinct darker terminal band at the tip, typical of the 'wild type' plumage pattern. The ventral side is slightly paler with a matte finish.
Barb Structure
Main surface is pennaceous and tightly interlocked; the base (calamus area) features plumulaceous (downy) barbs for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and slightly glossy on the dorsal surface; the vane is stiff and resilient, characteristic of flight-critical feathers.
Key Features
Broad rounded tip, dark terminal band, symmetrical vane, and ivory-colored rachis.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; found in urban areas, farmland, and rocky seaside cliffs (their ancestral habitat).
Geographic Range
Global distribution; resident on every continent except Antarctica. Non-migratory in most urban settings.
Ecological Role
Primarily a seed-eater and scavenger; provides a significant food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed tips), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, specific gray-green gradients).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons was the first bird species to be domesticated by humans over 5,000 years ago. They possess an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception to find their way home.
Condition Notes
Good condition; slight fraying at the tip and trailing edge indicates natural wear before molting. No visible parasite damage.
