Description

A secondary flight feather from a 'Blue-bar' or 'Checker' morph Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, small head, and short legs. Plumage is famously variable due to domestication, ranging from pure white to coal black, but typically features iridescent neck feathers and two dark wing bars.

Colour & Pattern

Bicolor pattern; base and lower half is a deep charcoal or slate gray (melanin-rich), abruptly transitioning to a pale, silvery light-gray or white at the tip and along part of the outer vane.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs throughout the distal portion with a small plumulaceous section near the base of the calamus; barbicels are tightly interlocked creating a smooth, wind-resistant surface.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, slightly stiff, and matte. The surface has a velvety feel typical of pigeons, with a slight powder-down coating that provides some water resistance.

Key Features

Distinct bicolor gray-to-white transition, rounded secondary shape, and the signature dense, soft-yet-stiff texture of the Columbidae family.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, farmsteads, rocky cliffs, and coastal bridges.

Geographic Range

Worldwide distribution. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced and now permanent residents on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks; also significant seed dispersers and scavengers.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed/tapered), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter buff colors, different banding), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, distinct white crescents).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons are the world's oldest domesticated bird, used for food, messengers, and racing for over 5,000 years. They are one of the few birds that can drink by sucking up water without tilting their heads back.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good; the tip shows significant wear and fraying (likely from contact with hard surfaces), and the calamus appears snapped or damaged near the base.
