Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather displays the classic 'pigeon grey' that characterizes the wild-type plumage. These birds are known for their strong, direct flight and clapping wingbeats during takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

A gradient of slate grey to blue-grey. The outer vane shows a darker, charcoaled edge, while the inner vane is a lighter silvery-grey. There is a subtle brownish-bronze iridescent sheen visible under certain lighting angles on the upper surface.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane to provide aerodynamic lift. The base shows a small amount of plumulaceous (downy) structure near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly waxy to the touch. The surface has a matte appearance with a fine 'bloom' or powder characteristic of many columbids which helps with water resistance.

Key Features

Distinctive slate-grey coloration with a pale rachis base, rounded tip, and the specific powder-down texture unique to the Pigeon family.

Habitat

Extremely versatile; found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, farmland, and bridges. In their ancestral range, they prefer sea cliffs and mountain ledges.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; resident year-round on every continent except Antarctica. They are highly successful urban colonizers and generally non-migratory.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also significant scavengers in urban environments.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tapered/pointed. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are more uniform sandy-grey without the dark slate tones.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated by humans over 5,000 years ago. They have an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way back to nests from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is slight fraying at the very tip and along the trailing edge, suggesting this may be a naturally molted feather rather than one lost to predation.
