Description
Large, all-black passerines with heavy bills and fan-shaped tails in flight. They are highly social, often seen in large family groups or massive winter roosts numbering in the thousands.
Colour & Pattern
Uniformly deep iridescent black with a subtle violet or blue sheen visible under direct light. The ventral surface is slightly more matte/grey-black. No banding or spots present.
Barb Structure
Densely pennaceous and interlocked throughout the main vane; the base (superior umbilicus area) shows some loose, greyish plumulaceous barbs.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and glossy on the dorsal side; the leading edge is very stiff to resist air pressure, while the trailing edge is more flexible.
Key Features
Solid black coloration with iridescence, asymmetrical flight feather shape typical of soaring/flapping birds, and a sturdy, dark rachis.
Habitat
Extremely versatile; found in agricultural fields, open woodlands, suburban parks, urban centers, and tidal flats.
Geographic Range
Widespread across North America, from southern Canada throughout the United States to northern Mexico; northernmost populations may migrate short distances.
Ecological Role
Omnivorous scavengers and predators; they play a vital role in nutrient cycling and controlling insect and small rodent populations.
Similar Species
Common Raven (larger, more wedge-shaped tail feathers), Fish Crow (nearly identical, best distinguished by vocalization or slightly different wing proportions).
Interesting Facts
Crows are among the most intelligent animals, capable of tool use, facial recognition of humans, and complex social problem-solving.
Condition Notes
Good condition; some minor separation of barbs near the base (barbule unzipping) and slight wear on the tip, suggesting a naturally molted feather.
