Common Raven (Northern Raven)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Passeriformes, Family: Corvidae, Genus: Corvus, Species: Corvus corax
Family: Corvidae (Crows, Jays, and Magpies)
- Shape
- Highly asymmetrical with a narrow, stiff leading vane and a broad trailing vane. The tip is tapered and shows distinct emargination (notching) characteristic of birds that perform soaring and complex aerial maneuvers.
- Size
- Approximately 12 to 14 inches (30-35 cm) in length. This size is diagnostic for a Raven, being significantly larger and sturdier than those of an American Crow.
- Rarity
- Common in appropriate habitat, though less frequent in the central and southeastern United States compared to the American Crow.

Description
This is a large, powerful flight feather from the largest passerine (perching bird) in the world. The Common Raven is an all-black bird with a massive bill, shaggy throat feathers, and a distinctive wedge-shaped tail in flight. Its wingspan can reach nearly 50 inches, and its flight is more hawk-like than a crow's, featuring frequent soaring and aerobatics.
Colour & Pattern
Deep, iridescent jet black. Depending on the light, a faint purple or blue structural sheen may be visible. The underside of the vane is slightly more matte than the dorsal surface. No banding or spots are present.
Barb Structure
Densely pennaceous and tightly interlocked with microscopic barbicels for aerodynamic flight. The base of the feather shows a small amount of plumulaceous (downy) structure near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and glossy on the upper surface with a stiff, high-tensile feel. The trailing edge is slightly softer than the leading edge, but the overall feather is robust and built for heavy weather.
Key Features
Large size (over 10 inches), deep black color, structural iridescence, and the specific 'notched' or emarginated shape near the tip which distinguishes it from shorter, more rounded crow primaries.
Habitat
Extremely versatile: found in coniferous forests, coastal cliffs, tundra, mountain ranges, and increasingly in suburban areas. They prefer open spaces for foraging with nearby high perches or cliffs for nesting.
Geographic Range
Found across the Northern Hemisphere (Holarctic). Widespread across North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa. In North America, they are permanent residents from the Arctic to Nicaragua.
Ecological Role
Apex scavenger and opportunistic predator. They play a vital role in cleaning up carrion and are indicators of healthy, diverse wilderness ecosystems.
Similar Species
American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos) which has smaller, less emarginated feathers; Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) feathers are larger and have a silver-gray sheen on the underside.
Interesting Facts
Ravens are among the most intelligent animals on Earth, capable of problem-solving, tool use, and complex communication. They can mimic human speech and have been observed playing in the snow by sliding down hills for fun.
Condition Notes
The feather appears to be in Good to Excellent condition. The vane is mostly intact without significant fraying or 'fault bars' (weak points caused by nutritional stress during growth).
