Description
This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon, a medium-sized bird with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. In its wild form, it features a grey body with iridescent green and purple neck patches and two black wing bars. They are famous for their strong, direct flight and bobbing head movement while walking.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform medium-to-dark slate grey (blue-grey). Typical of the 'wild type' or standard urban plumage. The coloration is melanin-based. The underside is slightly paler and more silvery due to light reflection.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic integrity during flight. Plumulaceous (downy) barbs are visible only at the very base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and somewhat matte. The surface has a fine, dusty 'bloom' characteristic of pigeons, which produce powder down that keeps the feathers clean and water-resistant.
Key Features
Uniform slate-grey color, strong asymmetry of the vanes, rounded tip, and the presence of a white powdery bloom on the surface.
Habitat
Extremely versatile; originally found on coastal cliffs and mountain ledges, but now dominantly found in urban environments, farmlands, and city centers worldwide.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed. Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and now resident on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary consumer of seeds and discarded human food. They serve as a major prey base for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/brown), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, darker grey with a different tip shape), or Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter grey-buff).
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as message carriers for centuries due to their incredible homing instinct, which relies on magnetoreception.
Condition Notes
Good condition. There is slight fraying at the tip and along the trailing edge, suggesting this may be a molted feather that has seen some seasonal wear. No prominent fault bars visible.
