Description
A clean, snow-white body feather from a domestic pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short neck, and small head. While wild-type pigeons are grey with iridescent neck patches, domestic white variants are bred for ceremonies or racing.
Colour & Pattern
Pure white throughout. No visible banding, spots, or iridescence. This indicates a domestic variant (leucistic or selectively bred white pigeon) rather than a wild-type Rock Dove.
Barb Structure
Primarily pennaceous with tightly interlocked barbs throughout the upper two-thirds; less plumulaceous (fluffy) down at the very base than many other species.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, slightly waxy, and somewhat stiff for a contour feather. It lacks the matte softness of an owl feather, appearing more water-resistant and glossy.
Key Features
Pure white coloration, strong and thick central rachis, symmetrical vane, and a distinct taper toward the base.
Habitat
Urban areas, agricultural lands, city parks, and man-made structures. Domestic variants are often kept in lofts or found in feral city flocks.
Geographic Range
Worldwide distribution. Found on every continent except Antarctica, heavily concentrated in human-populated areas.
Ecological Role
In urban environments, they act as scavengers and are a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons.
Similar Species
Egrets (feathers are usually longer/more delicate), White Chickens (rachis often thinner), and White Cockatoos (feathers often have powder down dust).
Interesting Facts
Pigeons can find their way home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetoreception and polarized light. White pigeons are often released at weddings as 'symbolic doves'.
Condition Notes
Good to Excellent. The vane is mostly intact with minimal fraying. The base of the rachis appears snapped or broken rather than naturally molted, though the lack of blood suggests an old break.
