Rock Pigeon (also known as Feral Pigeon or Rock Dove)
Kingdom: Animalia, Phylum: Chordata, Class: Aves, Order: Columbiformes, Family: Columbidae, Genus: Columbia, Species: Columba livia · Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves) · Primary flight feather (remex), likely from the mid-to-outer wing (P6-P8).

Species
Columba livia
Feather Type
Primary flight feather (remex), likely from the mid-to-outer wing (P6-P8).
Family
Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
Shape
Asymmetrical with a narrower outer vane (leading edge) and a broader inner vane. The tip is rounded, and the overall outline is elongated and slightly curved.
Size
Estimated 12-15 cm in length and 2.5-3 cm in width. This matches the typical size for a primary flight feather of an adult Rock Pigeon.
Rarity
Very Common; one of the most abundant bird species in the world.
Color & Pattern
Overall slate gray to charcoal. There is a subtle gradient from a darker gray at the tip to a slightly lighter, smoky gray towards the base. There is no distinct banding, which is characteristic of the solid gray primaries in many Rock Pigeon morphs.
Barb Structure
Densely packed and tightly interlocked (pennaceous) throughout the main vane to provide wind resistance for flight. Some plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs are visible at the very base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch. The surface has a matte to slightly satiny sheen, designed for aerodynamics and water repellency.
Description
This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. While 'wild' types are gray with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers, feral individuals show vast color variations from white to brick red.
Key Features
Uniform slate gray color, prominent asymmetry of the vane, rounded tip, and stiff, dark rachis.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; naturally found on rocky cliffs, but globally abundant in urban, suburban, and agricultural environments.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; found on every continent except Antarctica. They are non-migratory permanent residents.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The edges show minor wear and slight fraying, which is typical for a molted feather that has seen active flight use.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons were the first domesticated birds and were used as messengers for thousands of years. They can find their way home from over 1,000 miles away using magnetic fields and landmarks.
Ecological Role
Primary consumer of seeds and grains; they serve as a major food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed feather), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, distinct gray-brown tones), and various larger hawks (which would show banding or different rachis thickness).
