Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)
Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Columbiformes; Family: Columbidae; Genus: Columbia; Species: C. livia · Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves) · Flight feather (Secondary remex)

Species
Columba livia
Feather Type
Flight feather (Secondary remex)
Family
Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
Shape
Broad and slightly asymmetrical with a rounded, blunt tip; typical of secondary flight feathers which provide lift.
Size
Approximately 4 to 5 inches (10-13 cm) in length; width is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) at its widest point.
Rarity
Very Common; ubiquitous in urban and rural settings.
Color & Pattern
Uniform pale silvery-gray or light slate-blue across the entire vane. The underside (ventral) is slightly paler. There are no distinctive spots or bands, which is characteristic of the base grey plumage of the wild-type Rock Dove.
Barb Structure
Densely packed pennaceous barbs with interlocking hooklets (barbicels) providing a continuous, somewhat stiff surface; plumulaceous (downy) structure is visible near the base of the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat silky with a slight matte finish. The surface has a 'powdery' feel due to powder down, which helps with waterproofing and feather maintenance.
Description
This is a secondary wing feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. While plumage varies wildly in domestic and feral forms, the 'wild type' features a blue-gray head and neck with iridescent green and purple feathers on the neck, a grey body, and two black wing bars.
Key Features
Smooth silvery-gray color, rounded tip, robust white rachis, and the presence of fine powder on the vane.
Habitat
Extremely varied; includes urban city centers, suburban parks, agricultural farmlands, and coastal cliffs (their original natural nesting site).
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; a year-round resident in nearly every continent except Antarctica. Originating in Europe, North Africa, and Asia, they have been introduced worldwide.
Condition Notes
Good condition; the vane is mostly intact though there is some slight fraying and separation of the barbs near the tip, likely from normal wear or contact with a surface.
Interesting Facts
Rock Pigeons utilize 'crop milk' to feed their young, a high-protein substance secreted from the lining of their crops. They are also famous for their homing ability, using magnetoreception to navigate over hundreds of miles.
Ecological Role
Primary role as a prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as seed dispersers in some environments, though they are often considered a nuisance in urban settings.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are typically browner and more tapered. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are also similar but usually show more tan/buff tones.
