Description

A soft, muted feather from a Mourning Dove, a slender-tailed bird known for its soulful 'coo-oo' call. The bird itself is roughly 12 inches long with a 17-inch wingspan, featuring black spots on the wings and a distinctive pointed tail.

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-tan or 'buffy' brown base. The tip shows a subtle darker subterminal smudge or transition typical of the muted, earthen tones of the Mourning Dove.

Barb Structure

The upper portion is pennaceous and interlocked, while the base is highly plumulaceous (downy) for insulation. The aftershaft is present but small.

Texture & Surface

Extremely soft and silky to the touch. The surface is matte, lacking iridescence, which helps the bird remain camouflaged in ground-level habitats.

Key Features

The combination of the tan-gray 'buffy' coloration, the exceptionally fluffy plumulaceous base, and the small size identifies this as a dove contour feather.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, suburban backyards, grasslands, and light woods. Often found near ground-level feeding sites.

Geographic Range

Year-round resident across most of North America, from Southern Canada through Central America. Northern populations are migratory.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eater (granivore); they play a massive role as a prey species for raptors like Cooper's Hawks and are indicators of healthy grassland/agricultural ecosystems.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (feathers are slightly paler/grayer) and White-winged Dove (larger, often with more distinct white or dark contrasts).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are prolific breeders; a single pair can raise up to six broods in a single year in warm climates. Their wings make a distinct whistling sound upon takeoff.

Condition Notes

Good condition; the pennaceous vane shows slight separation (zips) at the tip, likely from natural molting and contact with the ground.
