Rock Pigeon (Common Pigeon, Feral Pigeon)

A small, airy body feather from the Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is a medium-sized, stout bird with a varied plumage, most typically featuring a blue-grey head, iridescent neck feathers, and two dark wing bars.

Uniformly pale grey to white. Lacks melanin-heavy banding or iridescent structural colors typical of flight feathers.

Highly plumulaceous; the barbs are loose and filamentous rather than interlocked, designed for trapped air insulation. No hooklets visible.

Extremely soft, fluffy, and matte. Lacks the stiffness or oily sheen found on flight feathers or specialized aquatic feathers.

Soft plumulaceous structure, pale grey coloration without markings, and a very thin, flexible central rachis.

Highly adaptable: urban centers, agricultural fields, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas. Commonly found nesting on building ledges.

Global distribution; resident throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and North Africa; strictly non-migratory in most regions.

Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also acts as a primary seed disperser and urban scavenger.

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff), Eurasian Collared-Dove (similar but usually more beige-toned).

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated. They possess an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception and solar cues to navigate home.

Good condition; appears freshly molted with no visible fault bars or structural damage from parasites.
