Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful long tail, pointed wings, and a soft grayish-brown plumage tinged with pinkish-buff below. Known for its plaintive cooing calls and rapid, whistling flight, it is one of the most abundant and familiar birds across the North American continent.

Soft grayish-tan or pinkish-buff base color with a distinct dark brownish-black central spot or subterminal sub-banding near the rounded tip, characteristic of doves.

Pennaceous upper vane with tightly interlocked barbicels, transitioning into a loose, plumulaceous downy structure near the base with no prominent afterfeather.

Soft and silky at the base with a fluffy texture, becoming smooth and slightly stiffer toward the rounded distal tip; matte finish with no iridescence.

Rounded tip with a distinct dark subterminal spot or patch, soft pinkish-gray or buff coloration, and a fluffy downy base typical of a body contour feather.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, prairies, and light woodlands, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the entire United States, Mexico, and into Central America, with northern populations migrating southward.

Acts as an important seed disperser and a vital prey base for various raptors and mammalian carnivores, serving as a key ecological indicator of open-habitat health.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though mourning dove contour feathers tend to be smaller and exhibit softer pastel buff and pink tones.

Mourning doves are one of the few bird species that can drink water by suction without tilting their heads back. They can reach speeds of up to 55 mph in flight.
