Description
A medium-sized, slender dove with a long, pointed tail. The Mourning Dove is known for its mournful 'coo-coo-coo' call and its whistling wing beats during takeoff. Its plumage is a blend of delicate grays and tans with black spots on the wings.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform buff-gray or soft brownish-gray characteristic of the Mourning Dove plumage. The tip has a slightly lighter, almost silvery sheen, while the base transition to a pale gray downy fluff. No distinct banding or spots are present on this specific contour feather.
Barb Structure
Mixed structure; the distal half is pennaceous (tightly interlocked with barbicels), while the proximal half (base) is plumulaceous (loose, fluffy, and downy for insulation).
Texture & Surface
Extremely soft and silky to the touch. The feather has a matte finish typical of doves, which produce a fine powder down that gives the plumage a soft, 'dusty' appearance.
Key Features
Soft buff-gray color, silky texture, and the distinctive bifurcated structure (half-fluffy, half-smooth) typical of Columbidae contour feathers.
Habitat
Open and semi-open habitats, including agricultural fields, suburban backyards, grasslands, and lightly wooded areas. Very well-adapted to urban environments like Columbus, Ohio.
Geographic Range
Abundant throughout North America, ranging from Southern Canada to Central Mexico. Native and resident year-round in Ohio.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eater (granivore); they play a significant role in weed seed consumption. They are a major food source for raptors like Cooper's Hawks and Falcons.
Similar Species
Rock Pigeon (larger, typically darker or iridescent), Eurasian Collared-Dove (very similar, but feathers are often a slightly cooler, paler gray).
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves are one of the most prolific breeders in the bird world, sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year. Their feathers are loosely attached to their skin as a defense mechanism (feather-loss), allowing them to escape predators by leaving a mouthful of feathers behind.
Condition Notes
Good condition; the distal barbs show slight separation at the tip, likely from contact with the ground or wind. No visible parasite damage or heavy wear.
