Known for its soft, muted grayish-brown plumage and melancholy cooing calls, it is one of the most abundant and familiar birds across North America. They spend much of their time on the ground foraging for seeds and are swift, agile flyers in open air.

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-brown or brownish-grey apical portion with a pale whitish-grey base. Melanin-based coloration typical of ground-foraging seed-eaters.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous upper vane with tightly interlocked barbs transitioning into a fluffy, plumulaceous base with loose, non-interlocking barbs.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and silky on the upper pennaceous portion, transitioning to soft and downy at the base.

Key Features

Delicate grayish-brown coloration, rounded tip, and the distinct dual structure featuring a smooth upper vane and a fluffy downy base.

Habitat

Open country, urban areas, farms, prairies, roadside edges, and lightly wooded scrublands.

Geographic Range

Widespread across North America, extending from southern Canada through the United States into Mexico and Central America, as well as the Greater Antilles.

Ecological Role

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and acts as a significant seed disperser for numerous weed and grass species.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica), though their body feathers are typically paler or have different shade variations.

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves can drink water without removing their bill from the surface, a rare ability among birds that allows them to rehydrate quickly in open areas.

Condition Notes

Good condition, fresh appearance with intact barbs and no obvious signs of severe wear or fading.
