Description

This feather belongs to a Mourning Dove, a slender-tailed, small-headed bird known for its soulful 'coo-oo' call. The bird has a buff-colored body with black spots on the wings and white-tipped outer tail feathers. They are legendary for their fast, direct flight and the whistling sound their wings make upon takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform grayish-brown to slate-grey on the dorsal surface with a subtle olive tint. The ventral (underside) is lighter silver-grey. The rachis is dark, transitioning from a pale base to a charcoal or blackish hue.

Barb Structure

Densely pennaceous throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic efficiency; plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs visible at the base near the calamus (quill). Barbs are well-interlocked with minimal fraying.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and velvety-matte appearance. The surface lacks the intense gloss of some waterfowl but feels silky to the touch, a characteristic of the Pigeon family.

Key Features

The combination of gray-brown coloration, distinct asymmetry, small size, and the characteristic 'silky' matte texture typical of Columbidae.

Habitat

Found in a variety of open and semi-open habitats including grasslands, agricultural fields, suburban backyards, parks, and light woods. Avoids dense, unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Abundant throughout North America from southern Canada to Central America. Northern populations are migratory; southern populations are year-round residents.

Ecological Role

Primary seed consumer (granivore); they play a significant role as prey for hawks and falcons. They are also important indicators of environmental health in agricultural landscapes.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Zenaida feathers are usually darker/browner); White-winged Dove (which would show a distinct white patch on the wing coverts/primaries).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are one of the most prolific breeders among birds, sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year. They also produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, which is a secretion from the lining of the esophagus.

Condition Notes

Excellent condition. The vane is intact without 'fault bars' or signs of parasite consumption. It appear to be a freshly molted feather from a healthy adult.
