Description

This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon, a medium-sized bird with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. They are famous for their varied plumage, ranging from the ancestral blue-grey with two black wing bars to white, checkered, or reddish-brown variants.

Colour & Pattern

Classic 'blue-bar' wing coloration: a gradient from a dark charcoal or slate-grey tip transitioning into a lighter pearlescent grey; the inner vane shows a pale, almost whitish translucent base common in many columbids.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs interlocked by hooklets for aerodynamic integrity; the base shows a small amount of plumulaceous (fluffy) downy structure near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, slightly waxy, and exceptionally sleek; the surface is designed to shed dust and water while minimizing air friction (turbulence) during high-speed flight.

Key Features

Strongly asymmetrical vanes, 'pigeon grey' coloration with a characteristic pale inner-vane base, and a very stiff, rounded rachis.

Habitat

Extremely varied; naturally occurs in rocky cliffs and coastal ledges, but has successfully adapted to urban environments, farmland, and suburban parks worldwide.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Serves as a primary prey source for urban raptors; they are also important scavengers in city ecosystems, though they can reach pest proportions in some areas.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers (smaller, more tapered), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter sandy-grey), or Band-tailed Pigeon (larger and darker).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers due to their incredible homing ability, which utilizes magnetoreception and solar cues.

Condition Notes

Good condition with minor wear on the trailing edge; no visible fault bars, suggesting the bird had a consistent food supply during the molt.
