Description

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapered tail, pinkish-fawn to greyish-brown plumage, and distinctive black spots on the upper wings. Known for its mournful, owl-like cooing call, it is one of the most abundant and widely distributed birds in North America

Colour & Pattern

Soft grayish-brown or taupe base with a striking, sharply defined, solid black oval spot near the rounded tip, characteristic of the upper body and wing coverts of this species

Barb Structure

Pennaceous at the distal tip with tightly interlocked barbs forming a smooth vane, transitioning rapidly into a very loose, fluffy, plumulaceous base with long, unhooked barbs

Texture & Surface

Silky and soft texture, matte surface finish, highly flexible with a fluffy, insulating base structure

Key Features

The combination of a soft greyish-taupe background color and a singular, well-defined black spot near the rounded apex of the feather vane

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, prairies, scrublands, suburban areas, and urban parks with scattered trees

Geographic Range

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and Central America, with year-round residency in most of its US range

Ecological Role

Important seed disperser and a vital prey species for various raptors and mammals, serving as a primary link in grassland and woodland food webs

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), which lacks the distinct black wing spots and features a black neck collar instead

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves can drink brackish water containing up to half the salinity of seawater without harm, and they produce 'crop milk' to feed their altricial young

Condition Notes

Good condition, clean barbs with minimal wear, showing a fully intact distal vane and fluffy basal down
