Identify a feather

Description

A classic contour feather from the neck of a Rock Pigeon. These birds are stout-bodied with small heads and short legs. This specific feather contributes to the shimmering 'gorget' seen when these birds display.

Colour & Pattern

Deep charcoal-gray to black base color overlaid with brilliant iridescent green and purple structural coloration. The iridescent sheen changes color depending on the light angle.

Barb Structure

The upper portion is tightly pennaceous with interlocked barbicels, giving it a smooth appearance. The base is plumulaceous (downy) with loose, soft barbs for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Glossy and smooth on the distal end due to structural iridescence; soft and matte at the downy proximal end. The surface has a slightly oily, water-repellent quality.

Key Features

Bold structural iridescence (green/purple) on a dark gray/black background, rounded tip, and a downy base.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; primarily urban and suburban environments, cliffs, farmyards, and coastal bridges. Very common in Santa Monica and Los Angeles coastal areas.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed across every continent except Antarctica. Resident year-round in Southern California.

Ecological Role

Primary urban scavenger and important prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Band-tailed Pigeon (feathers are usually more muted with a specific white bar) or certain domestic waterfowl, but the specific saturation of green/purple on a black base is diagnostic for C. livia.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are one of the few birds that can produce 'crop milk' to feed their young. They are also world-renowned for their homing abilities, using magnetic fields and landmarks to navigate.

Condition Notes

Excellent condition; likely a naturally molted feather. Vanes are intact with no visible fault bars or parasite damage.
