Muted grayish-brown tones with subtle lighter gray edging, typical of melanin-based pigmentation in waterfowl body feathers, featuring a whitish-gray base and rachis
Barb Structure
Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbicels, transitioning into a loose, plumulaceous (fluffy) downy base with an afterfeather structure
Texture & Surface
Smooth and firm at the upper vane with a matte finish, becoming extremely soft, silky, and downy toward the proximal base

Soft grayish-brown upper vane transitioning abruptly into a fluffy white and gray downy base with a distinct whitish central rachis

Geographic Range
Native to arctic and temperate regions of North America, successfully introduced to Europe, New Zealand, and other parts of the world

Acts as an important herbivore grazing on grasses and aquatic plants, nutrient recycler in aquatic ecosystems, and prey base for large mammalian and avian predators
Similar Species
Other large waterfowl such as Cackling Geese (Branta hutchinsii) or various domestic goose breeds, which can have very similar gray and white contour feather structures
Interesting Facts
Canada Geese mate for life and maintain complex family bonds that last through the winter migration cycle. They navigate using landmarks, the sun, and the Earth's magnetic field.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good condition; shows some mild fraying and separation of barbs along the edges and some minor wear, typical of a naturally molted body feather
