Description

This feather belongs to the Mourning Dove, a graceful, slender-tailed bird known for its mournful 'coo-oo' call. The bird itself is sandy-grey with black spots on the wings and a distinctive peach-colored wash on the breast of males. Their flight is fast and direct, often accompanied by a musical whistling sound produced by the wings.

Colour & Pattern

Gradient of cool brownish-grey to dark slate charcoal at the tip. The inner vane shows a lighter, almost silvery-grey underside. The leading edge is darker, and there is no distinct banding, which is characteristic of this species' sleek plumage.

Barb Structure

Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs providing a rigid, aerodynamic surface; plumulaceous (downy) barbs are restricted to the very base of the quill.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, stiff, and somewhat satiny. The surface has a fine, dust-like bloom common to columbids, which helps with waterproofing and feather maintenance.

Key Features

The combination of the slender, asymmetrical shape, the uniform grey-to-charcoal gradient, and the specific emargination (narrowing) of the outer vane are diagnostic for Zenaida macroura.

Habitat

Open and semi-open habitats including agricultural fields, grasslands, suburban gardens, parks, and light woodlands. Avoids dense unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Found throughout North America from southern Canada to Central America. Northern populations are migratory, while southern populations are year-round residents.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eaters (granivores), playing a role in seed dispersal. They are a significant prey species for hawks, falcons, and owls, forming a vital link in the food chain.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (larger, broader feathers), White-winged Dove (would show a distinct white patch on the vane), Rock Pigeon (shorter, broader primaries with different color gray).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, a protein-rich secretion from the lining of their esophagus. They also produce a distinct whistling sound with their wings during take-off and landing, which may serve as an alarm signal to other doves.

Condition Notes

Good to Excellent. The vanes are mostly intact with minor ruffling at the trailing edge. There are no significant fault bars, suggesting the bird was healthy during the growth of this feather.
