Description

This is a sturdy tail feather from a member of the pigeon family. Rock Pigeons are medium-sized birds (approx. 11-15 inches long) with a wide variety of plumage colors due to domestic breeding, ranging from the 'blue-bar' wild type to 'checkered' or all-white patterns.

Colour & Pattern

Dark charcoal gray or sooty black. This specimen shows a notable white tip or partial terminal band, which is more common in feral domestic variants of the Rock Pigeon than in wild-type individuals.

Barb Structure

Densely pennaceous throughout the main vane for aerodynamics, with a small plumulaceous (downy) section at the base (superior umbilicus).

Texture & Surface

Smooth, slightly stiff, and somewhat matte. Pigeons often have a 'powder down' that can give feathers a slightly waxy or dusty texture to the touch.

Key Features

Robust dark rachis, broad rounded vane, and the presence of a white terminal patch common in 'pied' feral individuals.

Habitat

Extremely varied; found in rocky cliffs (wild), urban centers, agricultural fields, and parks.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also serve as seed dispersers in some environments.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, specific gray band), or domestic breeds of fancy pigeons.

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (likely over 5,000 years ago). They possess an incredible homing ability, using magnetoreception and solar cues to find their way home.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. There is significant breakage and wear at the tip (distal end), likely due to contact with hard surfaces in an urban environment or natural wear and tear.
