Description

This is a robust gray-brown flight feather from a Canada Goose. The bird itself is a large waterfowl with a distinctive black head and neck, white 'chinstrap' cheek patch, and light tan breast. Canada Geese are famous for their V-shaped flight formations and loud 'honking' calls during migration.

Colour & Pattern

Dull charcoal gray to fuscous brown on the upper surface, fading to a lighter brownish-gray or silver-gray on the ventral side. There are no distinct bands or spots, which is characteristic of the species.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs designed for aerodynamic stability and water resistance. The structure is firm and resilient with well-developed barbules.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat stiff with a matte to slightly waxy finish. The surface is naturally oily to providing waterproofing necessary for waterfowl.

Key Features

Large size, uniform gray-brown coloration with a prominent white/cream rachis, and the specialized water-repellent texture characteristic of large Anseriformes.

Habitat

Ubiquitous across various landscapes including lakes, ponds, marshes, grain fields, golf courses, and urban parks. They prefer areas near water with open grazing land.

Geographic Range

Native to North America, breeding from the Arctic to the southern United States. They have been widely introduced to Europe, New Zealand, and South America.

Ecological Role

Primary herbivore that grazes on grasses and aquatic plants. They serve as a prey species for large predators and help cycle nutrients between aquatic and terrestrial habitats.

Similar Species

Branta hutchinsii (Cackling Goose) feathers are nearly identical but smaller. Anser albifrons (Greater White-fronted Goose) feathers have a similar shape but often show different brown tinges.

Interesting Facts

Canada Geese have a remarkable homing instinct, often returning to the exact same nesting spot year after year. They are also highly social and form long-term pair bonds.

Condition Notes

Good to Fair. There is some minor separation of the barbs near the tip (zipper effect), and the edges show light wear, possibly suggesting it was a naturally molted feather near the end of the season.
