Description
These feathers belong to a medium-sized, slender dove known for its mournful 'coo-oo' call. The bird has iridescent neck patches, a long pointed tail with white outer feathers, and black spots on the wing coverts.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform grayish-brown to olive-brown base with a subtle transition to a darker slate-gray at the tip; no distinct banding is present. The ventral side is lighter and more silvery-gray.
Barb Structure
Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs on the upper two-thirds for aerodynamic flight; the lower third (near the calamus) features loose, plumulaceous barbs providing insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and velvety texture with a matte finish. These feathers lack the oiliness of waterfowl but are highly flexible and durable for rapid takeoffs.
Key Features
Smooth grayish-brown coloration without barring, characteristic teardrop shape, and the presence of fine downy fluff at the base of the quill.
Habitat
Found in a vast range of environments including open woodlands, agricultural fields, grasslands, urban backyards, and desert scrub.
Geographic Range
Year-round resident throughout the contiguous United States and Mexico; northern populations migrate south from Canada and Alaska in winter.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eaters (granivores), they play a role in seed dispersal. They are a vital food source for raptors like Cooper's Hawks and Falcons.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are similar but generally larger and lighter gray; Rock Pigeon feathers are broader and often darker or more varied in color.
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves produce a distinct whistling sound when taking off or landing, which is actually a 'wing whistle' created by air rushing through specifically shaped primary feathers.
Condition Notes
Good to Excellent condition. The edges show minimal wear, suggesting these were recently molted or from a healthy adult bird with little parasitic damage.
