Description

This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are medium-sized, stout birds known for their bobbing heads and fast, direct flight. While basic wild-type plumage is blue-gray with two black wing bars, feral populations exhibit a massive range of colors (piebald, checkers, reds), which accounts for the high-contrast white-and-dark pattern on this specific feather.

Colour & Pattern

Bicolor: Deep charcoal or blackish-brown at the distal tip and along the leading edge, transitioning to a pale smoky gray or white base. The rachis is dark near the tip and pales to translucent/white at the base.

Barb Structure

Densely packed pennaceous barbs providing a stiff, aerodynamic surface; hooklets are well-developed for flight integrity; minimal plumulaceous down at the very base of the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, stiff, and somewhat waxy/matte. The trailing edge is slightly more flexible than the leading edge to allow for the characteristic aeroelasticity of pigeon flight.

Key Features

Extreme asymmetry; dark 'dipped' tip pattern extending along the leading edge; translucent white calamus; characteristic stiff 'snap' of the vane.

Habitat

Highly versatile: originally rocky cliffs, now predominantly urban areas, agricultural fields, bridges, and city parks.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; a year-round resident in almost every temperate and tropical region on Earth except for the polar extremes.

Ecological Role

Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also function as seed dispersers and urban scavengers. Populations are stable to increasing.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more uniform tan), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, different coloration), or a small crow (uniform black, different texture).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds ever domesticated by humans (approx. 5,000 years ago). They possess an incredible 'homing' instinct, using magnetoreception and the sun to navigate over hundreds of miles.

Condition Notes

Good to Fair. There is some minor fraying at the tip and along the trailing edge (vane separation), likely due to natural wear before molting or contact with rough surfaces.
