Description
The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful long tail, small head, and a soft grayish-brown overall coloration set off by black spots on the wings and pinkish-buff underparts. Known for its mournful cooing vocalizations and swift, whistling flight, it is one of the most abundant and familiar birds across its range
Colour & Pattern
Subtle grayish-blue on the upper pennaceous portion, transitioning to a soft buff or warm beige tone toward the tip, and dark gray-brown fluffy down at the base. The colors are soft, muted, and typical of dove cryptic coloration produced primarily by melanin pigments
Barb Structure
Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbules, transitioning sharply into a plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) basal portion with loose barbs lacking hooklets
Texture & Surface
Smooth and matte on the upper pennaceous vane; soft, silky, and loose at the basal plumulaceous section. Lacks gloss or iridescent patches
Key Features
Subtle soft gray and buff coloration, pointed symmetrical contour shape, and the distinct division between a smooth pennaceous upper vane and a fluffy downy base
Habitat
Open country, scattered trees, farms, suburban areas, parks, and grasslands, avoiding dense interior forests
Geographic Range
Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America and the Caribbean. Northern populations are migratory while southern populations are year-round residents
Ecological Role
Important seed disperser and a primary prey species for numerous raptors and mammalian predators, functioning as a key link in open-country food webs
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (Columba decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though feathers from those species are generally larger and have different shade variations
Interesting Facts
Mourning doves are among the few bird species that can drink water by suction without tilting their head back. They are also prolific breeders, sometimes raising up to six broods in a single year in warmer regions
Condition Notes
Good condition, fresh appearance with intact barbs and minimal wear along the edges
