Description
These feathers belong to the Rock Pigeon, a stout-bodied bird with a small head and short legs. The species exhibits a vast range of plumage variations due to domestication, but the 'wild type' is characterized by a blue-grey body with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers. Their flight is strong, direct, and characterized by rapid wingbeats.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform charcoal-grey to slaty-blue base. A faint dark subterminal band or shading is visible. The ventral (underside) surface is lighter and more silvery-grey. The rachis is dark grey to blackish.
Barb Structure
Densely interlocked pennaceous barbs on the upper half of the vane for flight efficiency; the base transitions into a softer, plumulaceous (downy) structure near the calamus (quill).
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff to the touch. The surface has a slight matte finish typical of pigeon feathers, which often carry a fine powder (powder down) for waterproofing.
Key Features
The combination of blue-grey coloration, the distinct asymmetrical shape of a secondary flight feather, and the lack of prominent patterns like spots or stripes helps identify this as a pigeon feather.
Habitat
Extremely varied; naturally occurring on coastal cliffs and rock ledges, but now ubiquitous in urban, suburban, and agricultural environments worldwide.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, they have been introduced to every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as seed dispersers and generalist scavengers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) feathers are similar but smaller, more brownish-tan, and typically more tapered. Crows have much larger, darker, and more glossy black feathers.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and visual landmarks to navigate over hundreds of miles. They were the first domesticated bird, used for food, messaging, and sport.
Condition Notes
Good condition. The barbs are mostly intact with minimal fraying, suggesting these were recently molted feathers rather than damaged ones.
