Description
This is a magnificent central tail feather from a male Ring-necked Pheasant. The bird itself is a large, chicken-like ground dweller with a colorful iridescent green head, red facial wattles, and a white neck ring. The body is a mosaic of gold, brown, and black. During flight, these long tail feathers trail behind, creating a distinctive silhouette.
Colour & Pattern
Golden-brown to rufous base color with distinct, thin dark brown or blackish horizontal cross-bars extending from the rachis to the edge of the vane. The rachis itself is pale tan to cream-colored.
Barb Structure
Densely packed pennaceous barbs along the majority of the vane, transitioning to a stiffer, more structural arrangement near the rachis. Some basal plumulaceous down is likely present but obscured near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat stiff or rigid along the rachis, with a satiny or slightly glossy finish on the vane surfaces. The feather is designed for display and ground stability rather than silent flight.
Key Features
Extreme length, tapered lanceolate shape, and fine dark horizontal barring on a golden-brown background.
Habitat
Agricultural fields, grasslands, hedgerows, and brushy areas. They prefer edges between open foraging ground and dense cover.
Geographic Range
Native to Asia; widely introduced across North America, Europe, and parts of Oceania. They are non-migratory permanent residents in most of their range.
Ecological Role
Primary consumer/omnivore and important prey species for larger raptors and carnivorous mammals. They help in seed dispersal and insect population control.
Similar Species
Wild Turkey (shorter/broader), Golden Pheasant (vibrant orange/red tones), and various large hawk tail feathers (usually have broader vanes and different banding patterns).
Interesting Facts
The Ring-necked Pheasant is the state bird of South Dakota. Despite being an introduced species in the US, it is one of the most popular game birds in North America due to its vibrant plumage and wily behavior.
Condition Notes
Fair to Good. The feather shows some significant separation of the barbs (zipper effect) and some wear/fraying along the edges, common for a molted ground-dwelling bird feather.
