Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather shows the classic 'blue-grey' color of the wild-type plumage. In life, the bird often features iridescent purple and green neck patches and two dark wing bars. They are known for their 'cooing' calls and bobbing head movement while walking.

Colour & Pattern

A smooth gradient of slate-grey (blue-grey) darkening toward the tip. The base of the vane is lighter, almost white, which is hidden when the feathers overlap on the wing. No distinct banding is present on this specific feather, typical of the grey morph.

Barb Structure

Densely pennaceous (interlocked) throughout the main vane for aerodynamic integrity, transitioning to a plumulaceous (downy) base near the calamus for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly matte with a subtle powder-down bloom characteristic of pigeons, which helps with waterproofing. The surface is soft to the touch but the vane is firm.

Key Features

Rounded tip, slate-grey gradient with a pale base, and a very smooth, fine barb structure with a noticeable powder-down texture.

Habitat

Extremely varied, including urban centers, suburbs, farmland, and rocky seaside cliffs. They prefer open areas for foraging and high ledges for roosting and nesting.

Geographic Range

Found worldwide across all continents except Antarctica. They are year-round residents in almost their entire range, showing no significant migration patterns.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers in rural areas and scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed/tapered feathers with tan/buff coloration) and Eurasian Collared-Dove (thinner rachis and more uniform sandy-grey color).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first birds to be domesticated (over 5,000 years ago) and have been used as messengers for centuries due to their incredible homing ability, sensing the Earth's magnetic field.

Condition Notes

The feather appears to be in Good to Excellent condition. The vane is mostly intact with minimal fraying at the edges, suggesting it was recently molted or dropped in a protected area.
