Description

This is a secondary flight feather from a Rock Pigeon, characterized by its solid gray hue. The bird itself is a medium-sized, stout bird with a small head and short legs. Plumages vary wildly in urban 'feral' populations, ranging from checker patterns to red and white, though the ancestral 'wild type' is gray with two black wing bars and an iridescent neck.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform slate-gray or 'blue' coloration across the vane; lacks the dark terminal bands seen in tail feathers. Subtle silver-grey sheen on the underside (ventral) surface with a pale whitish rachis.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic integrity, transitioning to a small plumulaceous section near the base (calamus).

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly oily or waxy to the touch, which provides water resistance. The surface has a matte appearance with a very fine powder-down coating.

Key Features

Solid slate-gray color, asymmetrical vane, rounded tip, and a relatively stout white rachis base characteristic of Columbids.

Habitat

Ubiquitous in urban and suburban environments, agricultural areas, and coastal cliffs. Highly adaptable to human-made structures.

Geographic Range

Worldwide distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and naturalized on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed and grain eater; they serve as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers (smaller, more tapered); Eurasian Collared-Dove (paler gray-buff); Band-tailed Pigeon (larger and darker).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years. They possess an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and solar cues to navigate back to their lofts from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition; slight fraying at the trailing edge tip suggests natural wear or 'preening scuffs' before it was molted. No fault bars or parasite damage visible.
