Description

A classic primary feather from the Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a stout body, short legs, and a small head. While feral populations show varied plumage (white, reddish, checkered), the 'ancestral' wild type is blue-gray with two black wing bars and an iridescent neck. They are known for their powerful, clapping wingbeats and 'cooing' vocalizations.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly slate-gray or 'blue' gray. The dorsal surface is slightly darker and more matte, while the ventral surface (underside) appears more silvery-gray with a slight sheen. No distinct banding or spots are present on this specific specimen.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked and pennaceous throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic efficiency; plumulaceous (downy) only at the very base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, stiff, and somewhat oily to the touch to provide water resistance. The leading edge (vane) is very rigid to withstand wind pressure.

Key Features

Asymmetrical vane, slate-gray coloration without barring, and the characteristic white, hollow calamus typical of Columbidae.

Habitat

Extremely diverse; originally cliff-dwelling, they now thrive in urban environments, farmlands, and rocky coastal areas.

Geographic Range

Found worldwide (except the high Arctic and Antarctic). Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia; introduced and naturalized on all other inhabited continents.

Ecological Role

Primary prey for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks; they also act as seed dispersers in rural areas and generalist scavengers in cities.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more brown/tan), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray-buff), and various small hawks (usually show distinct banding or mottling).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are credited with saving thousands of lives during WWI and WWII by delivering messages. They can also navigate using the Earth's magnetic field and possess exceptional eyesight.

Condition Notes

Good condition; slight separation of the barbs on the trailing edge suggests minor wear or 'unzipping' during the shedding process. No visible fault bars or parasite damage.
