Rock Pigeon (Rock Dove, Feral Pigeon)
Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Columbiformes; Family: Columbidae; Genus: Columba; Species: Columba livia · Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves) · Primary flight feather (remex), likely an outer primary (P8-P10)

Species
Columba livia
Feather Type
Primary flight feather (remex), likely an outer primary (P8-P10)
Family
Columbidae (Pigeons and Doves)
Shape
Distinctly asymmetrical vane with a broad trailing edge and narrow leading edge; the tip is rounded and slightly tapered.
Size
Approximately 12-15 cm (4.7-6 inches) in length, consistent with mid-sized Columbiformes such as the Rock Pigeon.
Rarity
Very Common; one of the most widely distributed and easily observed bird species on the planet.
Color & Pattern
Gradated slate-gray to charcoal. The distal end (tip) is darker, nearly blackish-gray, fading into a lighter neutral gray toward the base. No distinct bars or spots are visible.
Barb Structure
Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs providing a stiff, airfoil surface; plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs are present at the very base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and somewhat matte. The surface has a fine, velvety texture typical of pigeons, which helps in silent but powerful flight.
Description
This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. These birds are medium-sized with stout bodies, short necks, and small heads. Their plumage is incredibly diverse due to feral breeding, but the 'wild type' features a blue-gray body with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers.
Key Features
Asymmetrical vane indicating a primary flight feather; solid charcoal-gray coloration without banding; relatively small size for a raptor but too large for a passerine.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; naturally found on rocky cliffs, but globally abundant in urban environments, farmlands, and parks.
Geographic Range
Found worldwide across every continent except Antarctica. Native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia; introduced elsewhere.
Condition Notes
Excellent condition; the vanes are mostly intact with minimal fraying. There are small separations (splits) in the trailing edge barbs, typical of a molted feather.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to navigate. They were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years.
Ecological Role
An important prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also serve as opportunistic scavengers and seed dispersers.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tapered/pointed. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are lighter gray with a different under-vane shade. Peregrine Falcon primaries are much larger and usually show some barring.
