Description

This is a sturdy flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. Pigeons are medium-sized, stout birds with short necks and small heads. Their flight is strong, fast, and direct, often accompanied by a characteristic wing-clapping sound upon takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly dark charcoal gray to slaty-brown. There is no visible banding, which is typical for the primary feathers of the 'wild-type' or dark barred morphs of this species.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane to provide a stiff, aerodynamic surface; plumulaceous (downy) barbs are present only at the very base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat stiff on the dorsal surface with a slight matte luster. The trailing edge is slightly frayed, indicating natural wear from flight.

Key Features

Significant vane asymmetry, uniform dark gray coloration without barring, and a sturdy, dark rachis. The size and shape are diagnostic for a columbid of this size.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; naturally found on sea cliffs and mountains, but now most common in urban environments, farmlands, and city parks.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

High-level prey for raptors like Peregrine Falcons; in cities, they act as scavengers. They play a minor role in seed dispersal but are primarily known for their high biomass in urban food webs.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers are smaller and more tapered; Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are lighter gray with different proportions. Corvid feathers (Crows) are usually larger and glossier.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and landmarks to navigate. They were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years.

Condition Notes

Good condition but shows signs of natural wear. Some separation of the barbs (splits) is visible on the inner vane, and the leading edge shows minor abrasion.
