Description

A medium-sized bird with a chunky body, short legs, and a small head. They have a varied plumage, but the 'wild type' is grey with two black wing bars and a dark-banded tail. They are known for their cooing calls and 'clapping' wing sounds during takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Dark charcoal grey to blackish terminal band with a lighter greyish-white base. The distinctive iridescent sheen (purple/green) visible on the dark portion is a classic trait of adult Rock Pigeons.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous for the majority of the vane with tightly interlocked barbs; the base exhibits plumulaceous (downy) barbs for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly oily to the touch for water resistance. The surface is matte on the grey parts and glossy/iridescent on the darker section.

Key Features

Dark subterminal band, light grey base, iridescent sheen on the dark vane section, and a stiff grey rachis.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; found in urban environments, agricultural areas, and coastal cliffs (their original ancestral habitat).

Geographic Range

Global distribution; found on every continent except Antarctica. Primarily introduced but now a permanent, non-migratory resident in most areas.

Ecological Role

Primarily a seed eater; they serve as a significant prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper’s Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more pointed, buff-colored) and Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, has a prominent white neck crescent and different tail band).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years. They have a remarkable homing ability using the Earth's magnetic field and landmarks.

Condition Notes

Good condition; slight fraying at the tip suggests it was a naturally molted feather (stress or age-related wear). No obvious parasitic damage.
