Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather exhibits the classic 'pigeon gray' that provides camouflage in rocky or urban environments. The bird itself typically has a grayish body with two black wing bars and iridescent throat feathers.

Colour & Pattern

Dull slate gray to charcoal base with a slightly lighter, almost silvery-gray sheen on the outer vane. There is no distinct banding, which is common in the 'blue-bar' or 'check' morphs of this species.

Barb Structure

The upper two-thirds are pennaceous (firmly interlocked), while the bottom third is plumulaceous (downy and fluffy) to provide insulation. Barbules are intact but show some separation at the tip.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat waxy on the pennaceous portion; the surface has a slight matte-metallic luster characteristic of columbid feathers which often carry 'powder down'.

Key Features

Uniform gray coloration, distinct plumulaceous base, and a relatively 'stiff' pennaceous vane for a body feather.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; found in urban environments, farmlands, rocky cliffs, and grain elevators. Common in rural Minnesota towns like Sauk Centre.

Geographic Range

Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, they are now found worldwide (except Antarctica). They are year-round residents in Minnesota.

Ecological Role

Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as scavengers, cleaning up spilled grain and human food waste.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tan/buff feathers), Eurasian Collared-Dove (lighter gray/sandy tones), or American Crow (much larger, darker, and more iridescent).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated. They have an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and smell to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition. There is minor fraying at the distal tip and a small 'zip' separation in the vane, likely caused by mechanical wear or the bird's preening.
