Description
This feather belongs to the Mourning Dove, a graceful, slender-tailed bird known for its mournful cooing. The bird is pale brown and gray with black spots on the wings and a long, pointed tail tipped in white. They are known for their whistling wing beats during takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform mousy gray-brown or buff-gray base. There is a subtle metallic sheen visible in sunlight. The dorsal side is slightly darker than the ventral side, which appears more silvery-gray.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous for the majority of the feather with tightly interlocked barbs for flight efficiency; the base shows a significant amount of plumulaceous (downy) barbs for insulation.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and velvety to the touch with a matte appearance. The surface has a fine, dusty texture characteristic of Columbidae, which produce 'powder down'.
Key Features
Diagnostic gray-brown coloration, rounded tip without distinct banding, and the presence of fluffy down at the base typical of the Columbidae family.
Habitat
Found in a wide variety of semi-open habitats including urban parks, backyards, grasslands, agricultural fields, and open woodlands.
Geographic Range
Year-round resident across most of North America, from Southern Canada to Central Mexico. Northern populations are migratory, moving to the southern US and Central America in winter.
Ecological Role
Primary seed eaters that play a role in seed dispersal. They are a significant prey base for many hawks, falcons, and owls.
Similar Species
Eurasian Collared-Dove (feathers are usually slightly paler and lack the same brownish tint) and White-winged Dove (which would show a distinct stark white band).
Interesting Facts
Mourning Doves can store a large number of seeds in an enlarged part of their esophagus called the 'crop' to digest later. They are also known for producing 'crop milk' to feed their young.
Condition Notes
Good condition overall, though there is some light separation of the barbs near the tip, likely due to natural wear or contact with the ground after molting.
