Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. Plumage is highly variable in domestic forms, but the 'wild type' features a gray body, two black wing bars, and iridescent neck feathers. Their flight is strong and direct, punctuated by loud wing claps during take-off.
Colour & Pattern
A smoky gray-blue base transitioning to a dark charcoal or blackish band at the tip; lack of iridescence suggests it may be from the lower body or back rather than the neck
Barb Structure
Dually structured: the distal half is tightly interlocked (pennaceous) while the proximal half is loose and fluffy (plumulaceous) for insulation
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat waxy in the upper pennaceous section; the lower plumulaceous section is extremely soft and downy
Key Features
Rounded, spatulate shape with a distinct dark terminal band and a heavily downy base characteristic of the Columbidae family
Habitat
Highly versatile; found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, farmland, and coastal areas; nests on ledges or building overhangs
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia, but introduced and now common on every continent except Antarctica
Ecological Role
Primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; they are also scavengers and seed eaters that help recycle nutrients in urban environments
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are more pointed and buff-colored; Band-tailed Pigeon feathers are larger with different banding patterns
Interesting Facts
Pigeons produce 'crop milk' to feed their young, and they are famous for their homing ability, having been used to carry messages across continents for centuries
Condition Notes
Good condition; minimal wear on the tip (distal edge), suggesting it was molted recently or came from a protected area of the body
