Description
A classic primary feather from a ‘blue-bar’ variety Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is stout with a small head, short legs, and a distinctive iridescent green and purple neck patch. They are known for their strong, direct flight and clapping wingbeats upon takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Bicolor pattern with a dark slate-gray to blackish tip and leading edge, fading into a pale light gray or whitish base on the inner vane. The ventral side is typically lighter and more silvery.
Barb Structure
Pennaceous and tightly interlocked throughout most of the vane to provide aerodynamic lift; plumulaceous (downy) at the very base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth, stiff, and somewhat waxy. The surface has a slight matte sheen characteristic of pigeon feathers which produce powder down for waterproofing.
Key Features
White rachis, extreme vane asymmetry, and the gradient from dark charcoal to pale gray/white at the base.
Habitat
Extremely varied; originally cliff-dwelling but now primarily urban and suburban environments, agricultural fields, and rocky coastal areas.
Geographic Range
Global distribution; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and established on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Primary prey for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons; also serve as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove (smaller, more brown/buff), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, different gray tones), or various domestic pigeon breeds which can produce identical feather structures in different colors.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are one of the few birds that can produce ‘crop milk’ to feed their young and can fly at speeds up to 90 mph. They have been used as messengers for thousands of years due to their incredible homing ability.
Condition Notes
Good condition; minor splitting (feather ‘zippery’) on the trailing edge suggests it was a naturally molted feather rather than a plucked one.
