Description
The Rock Pigeon is a stout-bodied bird with a small head and short legs. This feather represents the classic slate-grey plumage. In life, these birds often exhibit iridescent green and purple patches on the neck and two dark bars on the wings.
Colour & Pattern
Uniform blue-grey (slate) coloration typical of the ancestral 'wild type' morph. The tip shows a slightly darker shade, and the ventral surface appears lighter and more silvery due to the lack of heavy melanin on the underside.
Barb Structure
Mostly pennaceous (tightly interlocked) at the distal end to aid in flight, transitioning to plumulaceous (loose and downy) at the proximal base near the calamus.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and somewhat waxy to the touch, with a matte appearance. The surface features a fine 'bloom' or powder, which is characteristic of the powder down produced by Columbids.
Key Features
Uniform slate-grey color, rounded tip, slightly curved rachis, and the presence of a downy base typical of secondary feathers in columbids.
Habitat
Highly adaptable, found in urban city centers, farmland, rocky cliffs, and coastal areas. Often nests on ledges of buildings or bridges which mimic natural cliff faces.
Geographic Range
Globally distributed; native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and naturalized on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
Serves as a primary prey species for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers in rural areas and generalist scavengers in urban environments.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller, more pointed, and tan/brown. Wood Pigeon feathers are larger and often have a more distinct white marking on the wing.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and solar cues to navigate back to their lofts from hundreds of miles away. They were the first birds to be domesticated, dating back over 5,000 years.
Condition Notes
Good condition; the barbs are largely intact with minimal fraying. The calamus is clean, suggesting it was molted naturally rather than plucked by a predator.
