Description

These feathers belong to the Wild Turkey, North America's largest game bird. Adult males feature iridescent body plumage that shifts from gold to green to copper. The bold white-and-black barred feathers are iconic of the species' wing and body plumage. Turkeys are large, heavy-bodied birds with long legs and a fan-shaped tail.

Colour & Pattern

Bold alternating horizontal bars of dark chocolate brown/black and creamy off-white/buff. One distinct feather shows a brilliant structural iridescence of metallic emerald green and copper.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous (tightly interlocked) at the distal end to provide structure and weatherproofing, transitioning to a soft, plumulaceous (fluffy) base for insulation.

Texture & Surface

The banded feathers have a matte to slightly satiny finish, while the iridescent feather is extremely glossy and smooth to the touch.

Key Features

Distinctive high-contrast horizontal banding combined with intense green structural iridescence; stiff, thick rachis common in Galliformes.

Habitat

Open woodlands, oak savannas, and forest edges. Commonly found in Santa Barbara's foothills, canyons, and oak-dominated riparian corridors.

Geographic Range

Resident throughout North America from southern Canada through the United States to central Mexico. The Merriam's and Rio Grande subspecies are common in California.

Ecological Role

Omnivorous foragers that disperse seeds and regulate insect populations. They serve as a prey species for large predators like mountain lions and golden eagles.

Similar Species

California Quail feathers have similar banding but are much smaller. Barred Owl feathers have similar colors but are much softer/fuzzier for silent flight.

Interesting Facts

Benjamin Franklin famously preferred the Wild Turkey over the Bald Eagle as a national symbol, calling it a 'Bird of Courage.' They can fly up to 55 mph in short bursts and roost in trees at night.

Condition Notes

Excellent condition. The barbs are mostly intact with minimal fraying, suggesting these were freshly molted or lost during a display/scuffle.
