Description
This feather belongs to a Rock Pigeon, a medium-sized bird with a plump body, short legs, and a small head. They are known for their varied plumage, ranging from the ancestral blue-grey with two black wing bars to checkered, reddish, or white patterns. Their flight is fast and direct, often accompanied by a loud clapping of wings upon takeoff.
Colour & Pattern
Charcoal grey to dark slate base color. The tip exhibits a distinctive white or pale grey wash, which is a common color morph in urban 'feral' populations. The underside is slightly lighter and more matte.
Barb Structure
Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked along the main vane. The distal (tip) area shows significant wear and separation of the barbs (fraying), exposing the individual barb structure.
Texture & Surface
Smooth and stiff along the intact vane, with a slightly oily/waxy coating characteristic of pigeons to help with water repellency. The tip is ragged and brittle due to environmental wear.
Key Features
Tapered shape, dark slate color with a pale rachis base, and a white-tipped or 'frosted' distal end, typical of feral pigeons with mixed genetics.
Habitat
Highly adaptable; naturally found on rocky cliffs, but predominantly inhabits urban environments, city centers, parks, and agricultural areas.
Geographic Range
Global distribution. Native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, but introduced and now resident on every continent except Antarctica.
Ecological Role
They serve as a primary prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They are also scavengers that help clean up food waste in cities.
Similar Species
Mourning Dove feathers are smaller, more pointed, and usually a warmer tan/buff color. Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers are lighter grey with a distinct white outer web on the tail.
Interesting Facts
Pigeons are one of the few birds that can produce 'crop milk' to feed their young. They also possess an incredible homing ability, using the Earth's magnetic field and smell to find their way home from hundreds of miles away.
Condition Notes
Fair condition. The base and mid-section are intact, but the tip is heavily frayed and shows 'feather wear' likely from contact with abrasive urban surfaces like concrete or asphalt.
