Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapering tail, small head, and a soft, grayish-brown overall appearance with black spots on the wings. Known for its mournful cooing call and swift, whistling flight.

Uniform soft grayish-brown (taupe) coloration typical of Columbids, with a darker central rachis and a slightly paler fringe along the edges. Melanin-based coloration providing camouflage.

Pennaceous upper portion with tightly interlocked barbs and barbules, transitioning to a plumulaceous (fluffy, downy) base.

Smooth and soft to the touch with a matte appearance. The upper vane is firm yet flexible, while the basal plumulaceous section is soft and downy.

Uniform soft grey-brown coloration, pale rachis, rounded tip, and distinct basal downy plumulaceous tuft characteristic of dove contour feathers.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, prairies, urban areas, and suburban neighborhoods, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States and Mexico into Central America, as well as parts of the Caribbean.

Serves as an important prey species for various raptors and mammals, and plays a role in seed dispersal by consuming large quantities of weed and grass seeds.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia), though Mourning Dove contour feathers are typically smaller, more delicate, and possess a distinct warm taupe-gray tone.

Mourning doves are one of the most abundant and widely hunted birds in North America. They drink by sucking up water rather than tipping their heads back like most other birds.
