Description

This is a quintessential flight feather from a Rock Pigeon. The bird itself is medium-sized with a chunky body, small head, and short legs. While feral populations vary wildly in color (from white to russet), the classic 'wild' type features a blue-gray body with iridescent green and purple neck feathers and two black wing bars. Their flight is strong, direct, and characterized by loud wing-claps upon takeoff.

Colour & Pattern

Uniformly pale to medium cool gray (blue-gray). The dorsal surface is slightly darker than the ventral surface. No visible banding or spots, typical of the 'blue-bar' or 'checkered' morph's flight feathers.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout the majority of the vane; plumulaceous (downy) barbs present only at the very base of the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth, stiff, and slightly waxy to the touch. The surface has a matte to low-sheen finish, designed for aerodynamic efficiency and water resistance.

Key Features

Uniform gray coloration, stiff off-white rachis, distinct asymmetry of the vanes, and a lack of serrations or specialized downy edges found in predatory birds.

Habitat

Highly adaptable; primarily urban and suburban environments, farms, rocky cliffs, and bridges. They prefer flat surfaces for nesting and roosting.

Geographic Range

Globally distributed; resident year-round on every continent except Antarctica. They do not typically migrate.

Ecological Role

Functions as a major prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks. They also act as scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed, brownish-buff), Eurasian Collared-Dove (grayer but usually with a more distinct 'powder' look and different proportions).

Interesting Facts

Rock Pigeons were the first bird species to be domesticated by humans over 5,000 years ago. They possess a remarkable 'homing' instinct, using magnetoreception and landmarks to find their way back to nests from hundreds of miles away.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The vane shows minor separation (splitting) near the tip and mid-section, likely due to mechanical stress or handling after being molted. No obvious signs of parasite damage.
