Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a long, tapering tail, small head, and gentle expression. They are soft grey-brown overall with black spots on the wings and dark-bordered spots on the head. Their flight is fast and direct, accompanied by a distinctive whistling wingbeat.

Soft greyish-blue overall tone with a pale whitish tip, typical of ventral or flank contour plumage. Melanin-based pigmentation showing subtle tonal gradation.

Pennaceous at the upper distal tip with tightly interlocked barbicels, transitioning to semiplume and plumulaceous (fluffy) downy structure near the base. Intact and in good condition.

Silky and soft at the base, becoming moderately smooth and firm at the pennaceous tip. Matte finish.

Delicate soft grey coloration with pale tipping, slender white shaft, and fluffy plumulaceous base characteristic of columbid body plumage.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and grassland edges. Avoids dense forests and deep swamps.

Widespread across North America, ranging from southern Canada through the United States, Mexico, and into Central America. Northern populations are migratory.

Important seed disperser and a primary prey species for various raptors and carnivorous mammals, serving as a crucial link in the food web.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) and Rock Pigeon (Columba livia). Mourning Dove contour feathers are generally smaller and possess a more delicate grey-pinkish or soft grey hue.

Mourning Doves are one of the most widely distributed and abundant birds in North America. They produce a mournful, cooing call that is often mistaken for an owl. They can drink brackish water and often swallow small gravel to aid in digestion.
