Description

The Rock Pigeon is a stout bird with a small head and short legs. This feather exhibits the classic dark terminal band seen on the wings of many individuals. In flight, these birds are strong and direct, often seen in large flocks performing coordinated turns.

Colour & Pattern

Bicolor pattern: a pale, dusty grayish-white base transitioning into a dark charcoal or blackish tip. This 'banded' look is common in the 'blue bar' and 'checker' feral morphs.

Barb Structure

Pennaceous; tightly interlocked barbs throughout most of the vane. The base shows minimal plumulaceous (fluffy) down. The trailing edge displays significant fraying and separation of barbs.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat stiff pennaceous vane with a matte finish. Pigeons produce 'powder down,' which can give the feather a slightly dusty or waxy feel upon handling.

Key Features

Pale gray base with a distinct dark terminal band; relatively broad and stiff structure; thick, light-colored rachis; characteristic size for a Columbid feather.

Habitat

Found in a vast range of environments including urban city centers, agricultural fields, rocky cliffs, and parks.

Geographic Range

Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, but now cosmopolitan; found on every continent except Antarctica due to human introduction.

Ecological Role

Primary role as a seed disperser and a significant prey source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons and Cooper's Hawks.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered, tan/brown tones) or Eurasian Collared-Dove (usually more uniform gray without the dark terminal band on the secondaries).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are renowned for their homing ability, using magnetoreception and smell to find their way home. They are one of the few bird species that can produce 'pigeon milk' from their crops to feed their young.

Condition Notes

Fair to Poor condition. The feather shows significant mechanical wear, with the barbs separated (unzipped) along the majority of the trailing edge. Likely a naturally molted feather near the end of its life cycle.
