Mourning Dove (Carolina Dove, Rain Crow)

The Mourning Dove is a slender, medium-sized dove with a graceful long tail, a small head, and a soft grayish-brown plumage often highlighted with pinkish or iridescent tones on the neck. Known for its distinctive, mournful cooing song, it is one of the most abundant and familiar birds across North America.

Pennaceous at the upper tip with tightly interlocked barbicels, transitioning to a slightly plumulaceous or semiplume-like structure near the base with looser barbs.

Uniform grayish-brown tone, soft rounded tip, delicate flexible rachis, and downy base structure characteristic of Columbiformes body contour feathers.

Open country, scattered trees, farmyards, suburban areas, parks, and grasslands, avoiding dense unbroken forests.

Widespread across North America, from southern Canada through the United States into Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Partially migratory in the north.
