Identify a feather

Description

This feather belongs to the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon. These birds are stout with short legs and small heads. Their plumage is incredibly diverse due to domestication, ranging from white to 'blue-barred' (the ancestral type) to rufous. They are known for their circular, flapping flight and distinctive 'cooing' vocalizations.

Colour & Pattern

Bicolor pattern with a dark slate-gray to charcoal-black distal half and a lighter pearl-gray proximal half. The transition is somewhat gradual. No distinct spots or iridescent bands on this specific feather, though the bird's neck may be iridescent.

Barb Structure

Mostly pennaceous and tightly interlocked with hooklets (barbicels) for aerodynamic integrity. There is a small amount of plumulaceous (downy) structure at the very base near the calamus.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and somewhat stiff on the vane surface. The trailing edge is flexible, while the leading edge is very rigid. It has a matte to slightly satiny finish.

Key Features

The two-tone gray-to-black coloration, medium size, and the characteristic rounded asymmetry of the Columbidae wing feather.

Habitat

Extremely varied; naturally found on rocky cliffs, but predominantly occupies urban environments, farms, Bridges, and skyscrapers worldwide.

Geographic Range

Found globally on every continent except Antarctica. They are mostly non-migratory permanent residents in their established territories.

Ecological Role

They serve as a primary food source for urban raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also act as seed dispersers and scavengers in urban ecosystems.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove (smaller, more tapered/pointed, tan/brown), Band-tailed Pigeon (larger, different gray gradient).

Interesting Facts

Pigeons are capable of navigating back to their nests from over 1,000 miles away using magnetic fields and infrasound. They were the first domesticated bird, with ties to humans dating back over 5,000 years.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The tip shows very minor wear, suggesting it was molted recently. No signs of parasites or fault bars are visible.
