Identify a feather

Description

A slender-tailed, small-headed dove with a soft brown and gray plumage. In flight, they are known for their rapid wingbeats that produce a distinct whistling sound. This feather reflects the bird’s overall camouflaged, earthy aesthetic.

Colour & Pattern

Uniform grayish-brown to buff-tan coloration. There is a subtle 'bloom' or powdery finish typical of doves. It lacks the dark spotting or white edging found on outer tail feathers of this species.

Barb Structure

Tightly interlocked pennaceous barbs throughout most of the vane for aerodynamic efficiency; plumulaceous (fluffy) barbs are present at the very base of the calamus for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly velvety/silky to the touch. It has a matte appearance due to 'powder down' particles that waterproof and protect the plumage.

Key Features

Soft brownish-gray hue, rounded tip, slightly curved ivory-colored rachis, and the specialized 'velvety' texture common to the pigeon family.

Habitat

Found in a variety of open and semi-open habitats including grasslands, agricultural fields, suburban backyards, and light woods. Avoids dense unbroken forests.

Geographic Range

Extensive range throughout North America, southern Canada to Central America. Resident in most of the U.S.; northern populations are migratory.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eater (granivore); they play a massive role in the food web as a prey species for hawks and falcons. Population is generally stable.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (larger, more gray), White-winged Dove (white patches), and Rock Pigeon (usually darker or differently patterned).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are known for their mournful 'coo-oo' song and for producing a 'wing whistle' with specialized feathers that alerts other birds to sudden takeoffs when a predator is near.

Condition Notes

Fair. The vane shows some separation (unzipping) and minor wear at the edges, suggesting it may be a naturally molted feather that has spent some time on the ground.
