Description

These medium-sized, stout birds are famous for their diverse plumage colors in cities, though their 'wild type' is grey with two black wing bars and iridescent neck feathers. This feather is a soft body contour feather used for thermal regulation and providing the bird's smooth silhouette.

Colour & Pattern

Pale greyish-tan to soft taupe at the pennaceous tip, fading into a creamy white or translucent white at the downy base. No distinct banding is present; the color transition is a smooth gradient.

Barb Structure

The distal portion is pennaceous (tightly interlocked with hooklets), while the proximal half is plumulaceous (loose, downy, and fluffy for insulation).

Texture & Surface

Smooth and slightly silky on the pennaceous tip; exceptionally soft, airy, and downy on the base. The surface has a matte appearance with no visible iridescence.

Key Features

The distinct 'half-and-half' split between the structured grey pennaceous tip and the long, white, downy plumulaceous base; small size; and characteristic columbid softness.

Habitat

Highly adaptable, found in urban city centers, rocky cliffs, farmland, and suburban parks. They are comfortable in almost any environment provided there is food and nesting ledges.

Geographic Range

Originally native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, these birds have been introduced worldwide and are now found on every continent except Antarctica.

Ecological Role

They serve as a major food source for urban-dwelling raptors like Peregrine Falcons. They also play a minor role in seed dispersal in some environments.

Similar Species

Mourning Dove feathers (typically darker, more pointed/tapered) and Eurasian Collared-Dove feathers (often a more uniform sandy-grey). The size and high down content distinguish it from larger raptors.

Interesting Facts

Pigeons produce a protein-rich 'crop milk' to feed their young. They were also the first birds to be domesticated, serving as messengers for thousands of years due to their incredible homing ability.

Condition Notes

Good condition. The pennaceous vanes are intact with minor separation, suggesting it was freshly molted or recently dropped. No significant wear or parasite damage visible.
