Mourning Dove (includes: Rain Dove, Turtle Dove)

This feather belongs to the Mourning Dove, a slender-tailed bird known for its mournful cooing. The bird is generally grayish-brown with black spots on the wings and a distinctive peach-colored wash on the breast of males.

Soft grayish-brown or 'mousy' tan at the tip, transitioning into a lead-gray or neutral gray downy base. Lacks distinct banding or spotting, exhibiting the smooth color gradients typical of pigeons.

Densely interlocked pennaceous structure at the tip transitioning to a large, loose, plumulaceous (downy) base with an aftershaft.

Velvety and smooth to the touch, with a matte appearance. The surface has a soft 'bloom' common to Columbids which helps with water resistance.

Soft grayish-tan coloration, extremely downy base (plumulaceous), and a rounded, spatulate shape without distinct markings.

Ubiquitous throughout North America, including Central Oregon year-round. Northern populations are migratory, while Western populations are often resident.

Primary seed eater (granivore); serves as a major food source for raptors like Cooper's Hawks and Falcons.

Eurasian Collared-Dove (slightly larger and more gray/pale) and White-winged Dove (usually darker with different venting).

Mourning Doves can fly at speeds up to 55 mph and are known for the 'whistling' sound their wings make during take-off and landing.
