Identify a feather

Description

The feather belongs to a medium-sized bird typically 12 inches long with a 17-inch wingspan. The Mourning Dove is slender with a long, pointed tail. Its plumage is a blend of soft browns and grays, with black spots on the wings and a distinctive peach-colored wash on the breast of males.

Colour & Pattern

Dull grayish-brown (taupe) across the distal vane, transitioning to a pale white or translucent downy base. There are no distinct mourning spots on this specific feather, though it shows the characteristic soft earth-toned melanin common to the species.

Barb Structure

The distal portion is pennaceous (tightly interlocked), while the base is highly plumulaceous (downy and fluffy) for insulation.

Texture & Surface

Extremely soft and velvety to the touch. The surface is matte, lacking iridescence, with a slightly 'dusty' feel due to powder down produced by Columbids.

Key Features

The combination of a soft taupe color, a large white plumulaceous base, and the velvety matte texture is diagnostic for the dove family.

Habitat

Found in a vast variety of open and semi-open habitats including farms, grasslands, edges of woods, and very commonly in urban/suburban backyards in Columbus, Ohio.

Geographic Range

Abundant throughout North America, ranging from southern Canada to Central Mexico. Found year-round in most of the United States, including Ohio.

Ecological Role

Primary seed eaters (granivores), playing a role in seed dispersal. They are a significant prey base for hawks and falcons.

Similar Species

Eurasian Collared-Dove (similar color but usually larger/grayer) or Rock Pigeon (usually iridescent or differently patterned).

Interesting Facts

Mourning Doves are known for their mournful 'coo-ah, coo, coo, coo' call and the distinctive whistling sound their wings make upon takeoff, which is actually a specialized feather vibration.

Condition Notes

Fair to Good. The feather shows some separation of the barbs ('zipped' texture is broken) and debris is present on the vane, suggesting it was molted outdoors.
